DIY Yoga Mat Spray

With coronavirus so prevalent in the news, I was mindful as a yoga teacher what I can do to prevent the spread of bacteria or viruses. Unfortunately yoga mats can be a breeding ground for bacteria as-well as picking up some funny smells. Sweaty hands and feet and sharing equipment can be instrumental in the spread of germs. We can all do our bit by washing our hands thoroughly and frequently and make sure any shared equipment has been cleaned and wiped down before putting away.

It is important to me that I use cleaning products that use either natural or plant-based ingredients, especially since I’m putting my hands, my feet and sometimes my face directly on to the mat. My yoga mat and I have a pretty intimate relationship so just like my skincare products, I’d like for the products not to be full of chemicals.

I have made my own DIY yoga mat spray which I will be bringing to class and it is actually easier than you think. It uses a few simple ingredients.

Witch Hazel – a special distilled herb that has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

Essential Oils – essential oils which help with both disinfecting and the smell lovely. I used Neal's Yard essential oils which you can buy from my online shop. These oils are organic and high quality.

  • Lavender - antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties

  • Lemon - antiseptic, disinfectant and anti-fungal properties

  • Tea Tree - antiviral, and anti-fungal properties

  • Eucalyptus - antiseptic properties

Water – to dilute the witch hazel and essential oils and make the spray more long lasting.

INGREDIENTS

  • 100ml spray bottle

  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

  • 2 drops of tea tree essential oil

  • 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

  • Witch Hazel

  • Water (filtered if possible)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add witch hazel to spray bottle until quarter full and then top up with water until almost full.

  2. Add in essential oils. If you prefer more fragrance, feel free to add more.

  3. Shake and spray directly on the mat. Wipe off excess with cloth and leave to dry.

SIMPLES.... Enjoy!
